Maria Negrão
Maria Negrão is a Portuguese architect, interior and furniture designer.
A defining period of her formation took place in Rio de Janeiro, where she completed her master’s degree. After persistently approaching the atelier of Jorge Mario Jáuregui, she became involved in projects focused on social housing and urban development in the favelas. This experience informed her thesis, “Sobre Uma Montanha em Movimento”, centred on the urban evolution of Vidigal.
That experience shaped a way of thinking about space that goes beyond aesthetics, with a strong awareness of how environments are used, adapted, and lived over time. Today, her work reflects a refined and considered approach, grounded in material, proportion, and context, shaped by the belief that design is inseparable from the life it holds.
This is also informed by a personal interest in how people live: the way they receive others, the objects they collect, and the atmospheres they create over time. Each project becomes a way of organising these living scenarios — not as fixed compositions, but as spaces that support everyday life.
The Studio
Studio Maria Negrão works across interior design, bespoke furniture, and creative direction for private clients, hospitality, and retail, both in Portugal and internationally.
Its work is defined by a clear and considered approach to space, where interiors and objects are developed together to create cohesive, lasting environments.
A close collaboration with Portuguese artisans is central to the studio’s practice. Many elements are developed specifically for each project, allowing for a level of detail and material integrity that standard production cannot offer.
The Approach
Each project begins with a conversation to understand the space, the client, and what the project needs to achieve over time.
The design develops from spatial concepts to material decisions and bespoke elements, in close collaboration with the client. The process is structured, but allows time for ideas to be tested and refined.
Throughout, the studio coordinates design, production, and implementation, working with trusted partners to ensure consistency and attention to detail at every stage.
